Glass Workshop Dates for 2019

Noreen Todd at Bal Maiden Studio Glass

Course Descriptions

I mainly teach classes in fused glass techniques, although I do teach other techniques which are detailed here. I run several glass fusing courses as set out below:

Glass Taster sessions -£35.

These are 2 hr sessions with an extra 1/2hr of leeway for finishing off and tidying up – so 2 1/2 hrs effectively.

During the session you will be able to make one coaster (10 cm square) or light catcher (18 cm x 6 cm). If time permits a second piece can be made but there will be a charge for the additional glass used (typically £2.50 – £5 for a coaster or light catcher depending on the size and the colour of glass used). If you wish to spend longer in the studio there will be an additional charge of £10 per 15 mins, divided by the number of people who stay.

One Day Fusing Workshop – £120

We start with cutting glass, and then kiln-carving with clear glass. We then make a piece of jewelry using dichroic glass, which is fused in a microwave kiln before we engrave it and put it into the main kiln. Then we start on colour. We make one picture or plate using cut glass. A light lunch is included as well as a set amount of glass to use and the firing costs. I would expect you to finish 2 pieces plus a piece of jewelry by the end of the day.

Two Day Fusing Workshop – £240

During the 2 days we start with cutting glass, and then kiln-carving with clear glass. We then make a piece of jewelry using dichroic glass, which is fused in a microwave kiln before we engrave it and put it into the main kiln. Then we start on colour. We make one picture or plate using cut glass and one using glass frits and powders, and perhaps paints. You get a light lunch each day and a folder of information to take home with you. You will have a minimum of 4 pieces to collect once they have been fired.

One-on-one Tuition – £200

This is a period of 5 hours in which we undertake a project together which is dictated by you. The cost of the glass used and the kiln firing is charged separately, and is dependent on what you make.

Day-time and Evening Classes

These are 3 hour sessions on some mornings and evenings. I presently have these running on Sunday mornings, on Monday afternoons and on Wednesday evenings on a (mainly) fortnightly basis.

These sessions are booked and paid for in advance, The cost £30 for a 3 hour session. However there is a discount available for those who pay for all the sessions in advance. Depending on the length of the term these sessions work out at either 6 or 8 weeks per term time, and cost £135 for the 6 weeks or £180 for the 8 weeks, if paid for as a complete block in advance. This is a 20% discount. A 10% discount is also available for those wishing to pay for 3 or 4 weeks in advance respectively.

Please note:

1 The fee for the Taster and one and two day fusing courses includes a pre-determined amount of glass and the firing costs of the pieces you make
2 That each full day course includes a light lunch.
3 Each course introduces you to the various cutting, grinding and polishing machines and materials in the studio as the need arises.
4 As people work at different rates and have different requirements, some people whizz through and want to make more pieces. This is allowed if time permits, and there is charge for the extra glass used and the extra firing costs.
5 We have studio rules which you must read before you come. You will be asked to sign these when you are here for our insurance purposes.
6 I ask that you to bring ideas and inspiration to help you with the process. However, you need to be aware that your designs will need to be simple while you are a beginner, especially on the Taster sessions where the piece needs to be in the kiln within the 2 hours. You design should not include any circles and if curves are used they must be restricted to gentle curves, as circles and curves are advanced work.
7 If you are unable to collect your glass after it has been fired (a 24 hour minimum process) we will arrange to send this to you for a £10 charge to cover the postage and packing.

You can book your place by making payment by cheque or bank transfer. If you want to book a place please telephone or email me to let me know.
